Partnership in Missions: The Power of Intercession – By Adebusola Owokole

Missions play a vital role in spreading the love and message of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. The call to missions extends to every believer, as we are commissioned to make disciples of all nations. However, the task of global evangelism and the challenges faced in various mission fields can be overwhelming. In the midst of these challenges, intercession emerges as a powerful tool for partnership in missions. This blog post explores the significance of intercession in missions and how it can transform the lives of both intercessors and those on the mission field.

The Nature of Intercession:

Intercession is not simply praying for others; it is a divine invitation to partner with God in His redemptive plan for the world. It involves standing in the gap, lifting up the needs of others, and interceding on their behalf before God. The intercessor acts as a spiritual conduit, bridging the gap between heaven and earth. As the apostle Paul encouraged Timothy, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people” (1 Timothy 2:1).

Intercession and Global Missions:

Intercession plays a crucial role in global missions. Missionaries and evangelists often face physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges as they work in unfamiliar cultures and face opposition. Intercessors provide vital support by praying for their protection, strength, wisdom, and favor. Moreover, intercessors can pray for open doors, receptive hearts, and the breaking down of spiritual strongholds in the regions where missions are being carried out. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Colossians, requested, “And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ” (Colossians 4:3).

The Impact of Intercession:

a. Spiritual Empowerment: Intercession deepens our intimacy with God and aligns our hearts with His purposes. As we intercede for missions, we become more attuned to the Holy Spirit’s leading and gain a greater understanding of God’s heart for the lost. The apostle Paul reminded the Ephesians to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (Ephesians 6:18).

b. Transformation of Lives: Intercession not only affects the mission field but also transforms the lives of intercessors themselves. As we intercede, we grow in compassion, faith, and perseverance. God often uses intercession to shape us into vessels that can carry His love and power to those in need. The prophet Isaiah declared, “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness” (Isaiah 58:9b).

Intercession is a powerful means of partnership in missions. It enables us to participate in God’s work of reaching the lost, supporting missionaries, and transforming lives. As intercessors, we have the privilege to stand in the gap, lifting up the needs of others and releasing God’s power and provision. Let us embrace the call to intercede for missions, knowing that our prayers can impact nations and change the course of history. In the words of the Lord to King Solomon, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
